Before you scan

• Come fasting if you can. Food and drink shift your body water and weight enough to blur the measurements, and consistent conditions make every future scan comparable to this one. Plain water is fine (and encouraged).
• Wear comfortable clothing without metal. Athletic wear is perfect. Avoid zippers, snaps, metal buttons, belts, underwire bras, and jewelry; metal shows up on the scan and distorts the numbers.
• Skip calcium supplements for 24 hours before the visit, including multivitamins that contain calcium. Undissolved calcium tablets can read as bone and skew the results.
• Tell us about recent imaging. If you've had a barium study or a CT or nuclear medicine scan with contrast in the past week, let us know; the residual contrast interferes with DEXA and we'll simply sequence things differently.
